Paint Disposal
The state (TDEC) is no longer accepting latex based paint at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.
They recommend residents take care of the leftover paint themselves.
Here's how:
- Do you have more than 1/2 gallon or good paint? Donate it to Habitat for Humanity. They are always in need of paint for houses. List FREE PAINT on Craigslist.org. People take anything for free and will use it so it will not go to waste.
- Are the paint cans empty or is the paint completely dry? This can go directly into your trash. Paint is no longer hazardous to the landfill if dry. Make sure to leave the lid off so collectors will know the paint is dry.
- Dry it up. Mix in kitty litter, soil, sand, mortar mix or shredded paper. Leave the lid off, once dry it can be disposed in your trash, make sure to leave the lid off so collectors know the paint is dried, they will not take it otherwise.
- Just want rid of it? Spectra Recycling 1627 Robert C. Jackson Dr. Maryville 865-982-2995. They charge a small fee to dispose of it properly.
Oil based paint will never dry up and cannot be disposed of with your trash.
It's flammable and extremely hazardous.
