Telephone Book Recycling

.

Local schools can win cash by participating in this community recycling project. This program is sponsored locally by Keep Blount Beautiful, Spectra Recycling, Blount County Litter Grant Program, Blount County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill.  These sponsors share a commitment to recycling and preserving valuable community resources.

Each participating school can choose from a 4' x 4' pallet or  4' x 4' x 4' gaylord box for the length of the program. The books will be stacked on pallets or put in gaylord boxes under a shelter, away from rain or snow, provided by Spectra Recycling. The recycling program will run from January 9 – February 10. The pallet/gaylord box will be dropped off Thursday or Friday before the event, unless requested otherwise. Each school will have to count the number of books collected and keep a record in the office. Count large books as 2 and small books as 1. All books must be counted by the school and turned in to KBB by Monday, February 13.  Contact Spectra Recycling at (865) 970-0005 to have your full pallet/gaylord box picked up. Please allow 1-2 days for pick up.

Spectra Recycling will be providing collection services and Keep Blount Beautiful will be providing funds for cash awards this year.  Our goal is to reward each school $50 that recycles one outdated directory per student enrolled.  An additional $50 bonus is awarded for each ton of used directories collected.  The schools will be divided into two divisions: An award of $500 will be given to the overall school with the most directories collected per student.

Pallets are 4' x 4', and Gaylord boxes 4' x 4' x 4'. If you would like to change any of the information (ex. number of students or pallet option) given to the KBB representative, please do so via phone or email. Also, if you have not supplied KBB with all of the data or need to confirm participation, please do so as soon as possible. Tip: loading docks might be a great place for storage.

If you have any other questions please call the Keep Blount Beautiful office at 681-4809 or email keepblo@earthlink.net.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of the recycling effort is to divert used telephone directories from the landfill into a recycling program.

Tips for Maximizing Your Telephone Directory Recycling Effort

Information can be emailed to parents, added to newsletters or KBB can print flyers for each student for you to hand out to each student. Most schools are including the information in the school newsletter sent home to students. Please contact Charlene at 681-4809 if you would like KBB to have flyers printed for each student.

All directories may be included, not just the Blount County edition.  Count large books as 2 and smaller books as 1.

If your Adopt-A-School partner or other large directory user wishes to donate directories for your benefit, these directories do not have to be delivered to your school.  Directories can be left in the Mixed Paper bins at one of the recycling drop-off centers.  In order for your school to receive credit, the donor must send an email or call Keep Blount Beautiful giving the count of directories and the date on which the directories were deposited at the drop-off center.  The letters must be sent by February 10th, 2011.

In order to make your collection even more successful you might want to:

·        Hold a kick-off event at your school.  Create a sculpture from directories.  Have faculty members compete in a relay to carry a stack of directories.  Have students compete to build the largest stack of directories.

·        Call large businesses or large telephone directory users in your area and ask if they will donate directories.

·        Set a goal of collecting one ton of directories and arranging them so students get an idea of the size of one ton.  Each BlountCounty directory weighs approximately two pounds.

·        Reward the student who brings in the 1. oldest directory 2. the directory from the farthest away 3. the most directories the first day.

·        Make school wide announcements reminding students to bring directories.  Here is some information you can use in your announcements:
